The problem of illegal drugs in the Philippines continues to pose a significant threat to national security. Republic Act No. 9165, otherwise known as the "Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002," enacted into law in June 2002, laid down an extensive legal framework for drug enforcement in the Philippines. The law imposes stiffer penalties for drug-related crimes and allows for more concrete courses of action for the national anti-drug campaign.
The study was conducted to determine the cases of violation of R.A. 9165 in the Province of Guimaras in the year 2006 to 2012. Specifically, it aimed to determine the profile of the offenders in terms of age, sex, and civil status; how many cases of R.A. 9165 in the Province of Guimaras were recorded from the year 2006 to 2012; which municipality had the highest and lowest number of cases related to R.A. 9165; the kinds of illegal drugs confiscated from the offenders; and to determine the number of cases filed related to R.A. 9165 by different municipal police stations from 2006 to 2012.
The study utilized descriptive research. Secondary data was used from the Guimaras Police Provincial Office covering the years 2006 to 2012 about cases of R.A. 9165. Data was analyzed using statistical tools such as frequency count, percent, and mean.
Most of the respondents were aged between 18–26 years old. The majority were male and single. As to cases of R.A. 9165, most of the offenders came from the Municipality of Buenavista, and no offenders were recorded in the Municipality of San Lorenzo during the years 2006–2012. There were only two kinds of illegal drugs — marijuana and shabu — that were confiscated from the offenders. R.A. 9165 cases were highest in the year 2010 and lowest in the year 2012. All cases were filed and are now on trial.
